Is My Digital Watch Cool Yet?

Chris LockhartBlog Series Vol. 1, Chris Lockhart

I have to admit, I am a child of the 70’s, and somewhat of a tech nerd.  So I have owned digital watches since I was old enough to ask for one.  From the simple orange LED style as my first one, to the advanced “Calculator Watch” when I was in Junior High School.

Needless to say, that did not make me cool.

But times have changed.  CES 2016 has just wrapped up and wearable technology was one of the hottest topics.  There are so many choices for Smart Watches.  The veterans: Apple Watch, Fitbit, Android Wear, and the new entries: Fossil, Martian, and Wisewear are just a few.

So what should I look for in a Smart Watch?

  1. What phone do you have?
Most of the watches communicate with your smart phone. So that is a good starting point.  Apple Watch only works with iPhone.
  2. What do you want from your watch?
Some users want updates and notifications on the watch, others prefer fitness and health tracking.  Still others want to make a fashion statement.  So make a choice based on that
  3. How much do you want to spend?
The pricing for smart watches can run from about $150 to $17,000. (no that is not a typo!) So set your budget and let that also guide your purchase.

I myself wear the Apple Watch to compliment my iPhone.  I use it for notifications, scheduling and updates.  It allows me to keep track of my busy life.  I receive selected emails, text messages and schedule alerts. It also keeps track of some basic health information for me; heart rate, paces walked, and flights of stairs climbed.

The 70’s child in me is vindicated and I love my newest digital watch.

Which watch is your favorite?
