Poet and activist Amanda Gorman has penned an original poem inspired by the global box office hit film, Wicked.

Titled, “Do Us Good,” the poem explores themes similar to those in the film: what it means to bad, what it means to be good, and what happens when we dare to be different.

In a powerful performance of the poem, Gorman, in a white gown, begins by asking, “Are we born wicked, or do we have wickedness thrust upon us?”

She goes on to explore how assumptions can be detrimental.

“There is a world we miss when we misbehave, but we miss just as much when we misconstrue,” she says. “When we distrusts what is different, and detest what is new.”

The 26-year-old persists, stating, “Only with decency do we discover, people are not born evil, we are born equal.”

In one of several nods to Wicked, Gorman says, “Defending the good is how we defy gravity,” before noting how understanding each other can help us evolve.

“To be understood, as we should, and if this they would mourn as wicked,” she says. “Then let this wicked do us good.”
