Christmas is right around the corner, which means oven-roasted meals and gathering with loved ones to watch movies that evoke a yuletide spirit.
Everyone has their favorites — Home Alone, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, or Miracle on 34th Street — and each streamer has its own robust collection of Christmas flicks.
Of the many that populate Disney Plus (Disney+), here are five you won’t want to miss this holiday season.
The Santa Claus
The Santa Claus never goes out of style. The 1994 holiday film follows Scott Calvin (Tim Allen), who, after Santa Claus falls on his roof, is forced to put on his red suit and take over the gig. He’s at first resistant to the job (and the holiday spirit), but as he starts to embrace the ways in which his life is transformed, he realizes it’s just what he needed.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special
Good news for Marvel fans (or parents of Marvel fans) —The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special combines all the fun of the superhero genre with a little Christmas spirit. The special shoes Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) feeling down after Gamora’s tearjerking departure at the conclusion of Avengers: Endgame. To cheer him up, the eponymous Guardians take a trip to Earth to bring back his childhood hero, actor Kevin Bacon. It’s a fun adventure even non-MCU-ers will enjoy.
Dashing Through the Snow
Dashing Through the Snow hits all the beats of a good Christmas movie: an endearing protagonist (in this case, a social worker named Eddie, played by Ludacris, who has a mean case of “Claus-trophobia” every yuletide season); a Santa in need (Lil Rel Howery offers a funny take on the holiday icon in this film); and some family-friendly hijinks (as Santa is being hunted by those who want to get their hands on his naughty-or-nice list). Eddie and his daughter, played by Madison Skye Validum, must help Santa evade his chasers, all while helping Eddie change his outlook on Christmas.
Home Alone
In many American households, there’s no Christmas without the Home Alone franchise, and none are better than its first film. In it, a young Macaulay Culkin plays 8-year-old Kevin McCallister, who is accidentally left at home when his family travels to France for the holidays. Kevin is then forced to face “Wet Bandits” Harry and Marv, played by Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern respectively, who are trying to rob the McCallisters’ home. Kevin proves to be a tricky opponent as hilarious hijinks ensue.
Home Alone 2: Lost in New York
The Home Alone franchise is best enjoyed in bulk, so after finishing Home Alone, Home Alone: Lost in New York is the perfect follow-up. Kevin McCallister is back in this 1992 sequel — this time on vacation in New York City, while the rest of the McCallister clan is in Florida. He has a ball in the City’s famous Plaza Hotel, until the rebranded Wet Bandits — now the “Sticky Bandits” — spoil his fun.
