Lil Nas X’s new “Dreamboy” era is officially underway. The Grammy-winning artist released a new single titled “Need Dat Boy” just a week after the party-filled anthem “Light Again,” which dropped a week ago.
Lil Nas X alternates between singing and rapping on the track, which Jahnei Clarke produced: “I been lookin’ for a muse, need a new persona/ Put your picture on my wall, you my new Madonna/ Sorry, darlin’, I been down for a couple summers/ Falling back in the crowd, smokin’ marijuana,” they sing in the opening verse.
“Y’all do not support nobody/ Show up for y’all / But y’all don’t show up for Lil Nazy,” they rap in the second verse, which seemingly addresses the frustration over some of their underperforming singles over the past two years. “Look how I open doors and everybody run in/ A lot of y’all are just my peers/ Y’all ain’t my friends/ A lot of y’all say y’all love me/ Y’all just pretend/ A lot of y’all watch me drown in that deep end.”
The latter part of the track picks up the tempo and features a sample from Trina’s 2000 single “Pull Over,” Rolling Stone reported. The official visualizer features Lil Nas X’s new Dreamboy character, and the song of course ends with a nod to his new era: “You in Dreamworld and you listening to Dreamboy.”
Lil Nas X also featured a special guest on his cover art for “Need Dat Boy.” R&B singer Destin Conrad is seen kissing Lil Nas X in a car in the official cover art and again pictured on a motorcycle behind the artist in what looks like a music video teaser.
“Finna start being a video vixen hire me yall”, Conrad wrote on his Instagram Story while teasing the project. Lil Nas X didn’t share an official release date for their “Need Dat Boy” music video.
