Shaqir O’Neal, the son of NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal, is making strides in his debut basketball season at Florida A&M University. The 21-year-old helped the Rattlers win against Trinity Baptist University on Friday. The team won 110-68 in a game hosted at the Al Lawson Center.
According to the university, this marks FAMU’s first win of the season. One of O’Neal’s dunks was even featured on ESPN Sportscenter’s Top Ten Plays.
“From the Baseline, Florida A&M’s Shaqir O’Neal — yes, that name sounds familiar — dunks over Micah Johnson. And, for clarification, that is Shaq’s son showing off his skills,” a commentator said, according to HBCU Gameday.
The forward scored 26 points, which included four three-pointers, nine rebounds and four blocks. Four other FAMU players scored in double figures. Milton Matthews posted 21 points, Sterling Young 17 points, Jocobi Hendricks 13 points and Jordan Chatman 11 points, according to The Tallahassee Democrat.
So far this season, O’Neal is averaging 10.8 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. It is his first season with the Rattlers, as he recently transferred to FAMU after completing his first three years of college at Texas Southern University.
As Blavity reported, he participated in the 2022 and 2023 SWAC Tournament Championships.
“One of the new guys that we’re really happy and excited about is Shaqir O’Neal,” TSU head coach Johnny Jones said in July following the announcement that O’Neal was joining FAMU. “I think people that hadn’t had an opportunity to see his offseason workouts — I think he’s done an awesome job in transitioning in the last two years and we’re looking forward to him making an impact with us and for us as well.”
FAMU is set to play against Clemson University on Nov. 29.
