Hurry Up Tomorrow, the upcoming thriller film starring The Weeknd (in his feature film debut) and Jenna Ortega, has landed at Lionsgate.
Deadline first broke the news of the deal for the film, which sees The Weeknd, aka Abel Tesfaye, star with Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan. This is The Weeknd’s first film role. He will also write the score with Daniel Lopatin, and release a separate Hurry Up Tomorrow album. Trey Edward Shults is the director.
Starring and composing isn’t all for The Weeknd–according to Deadline, the film’s idea also comes from the singer/songwriter, with Shults writing the screenplay.
Deadline reports that Adam Fogelson, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair, confirmed The Weeknd’s involvement, calling the musician “a visionary whose art cannot be contained by any single medium.”
“With Hurry Up Tomorrow, in partnership with Trey, his musical universe expands onto the big screen with a psychological thriller that will usher in a new cinematic experience for fans,” he said. “We are thrilled to be bringing it to audiences worldwide.”
Shults’ resume includes Krisha, It Comes at Night–also a dark psychological film–and Waves, starring Kelvin Harrison Jr., Taylor Russell, Sterling K. Brown and Renée Elise Goldsberry.
The Weeknd, on the other hand, made his small-screen debut in the controversial HBO series The Idol, which he co-created with Euphoria creator Sam Levinson.
