As the United States approaches the 250th anniversary of American independence this summer, President Trump has pushed a number of ostentatious and sometimes controversial celebrations. Now, a new concert series has been announced for the nation’s capital, featuring an interesting mix of artists, most of whom are best known for their hits from decades ago.
Trump-aligned concert series announced as part of “Freedom 250” celebration
On Monday, Freedom 250 announced the lineup for its “The Great American Fair” concert series, part of a series of events being held by the Trump administration to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States declaring its independence. The mix of featured artists includes a number of acts popular in the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s, including The Commodores, Morris Day & The Time, Bret Michaels, Young MC, C+C Music Factory, Vanilla Ice, Milli Vanilli and Martina McBride. More recent performers include rap star Flo Rida. The lineup announcement also promises “many more” artists. The concerts will take place between June 25 and July 10 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Admission is free for the shows, but concertgoers are being asked to RSVP in advance.
Freedom 250 describes itself as a “non-partisan organization delivering presidential-level celebrations for our nation’s 250th birthday.” However, The Independent reported that the event series is being funded as a public-private partnership with various companies that enjoy federal contracts or are otherwise aligned with President Trump, including Palantir, Oracle, Deloitte and Lockheed Martin, as well as other donors. Democrats in Congress, as well as watchdog organizations, are calling for greater transparency and accountability surrounding the funding of the celebrations; many were alarmed by reports that donors were offered special access to Trump in exchange for contributions of $1 million or more. In addition to the concert series, these donations will help fund events such as an IndyCar race in Washington, D.C., and an Ultimate Fighting Championship event to be conducted in a fighting ring that is controversially being constructed on the grounds of the White House.
Negative reactions to concert series lineup
“The Great American Fair” is reminiscent of another MAGA-friendly concert series that has run in recent years, the Kid Rock-headlined Rock the Country festival. Rappers Nelly and Ludacris were criticized for signing up for the right-wing festival, with Ludacris withdrawing and blaming his inclusion on a scheduling “mix-up.” Similar reactions are being expressed to some of the artists featured for the Freedom 250 concerts. “Hurts to see Morris Day & The Time on this lineup,” one account on X posted, drawing a reply of “Commodores hurt too.”

The inclusion of Milli Vanilli drew many critical reactions; the pop duo’s 1990 Best New Artist Grammy was revoked after it was revealed that the group lip-synched over other singers’ vocals, and member Rob Pilatus died of an alcohol and prescription drug overdose in 1998. Singer-songwriter Brad Skistimas, who performs under the stage name Five Times August, quipped, “Nobody asked me so you’re getting Milli Vanilli instead.”
Many commenters simply lamented the lack of star power included in the lineup. “This is a prime example of just how badly the conservative movement has completely lost the culture war,” Skistimas said in another post reacting to the lineup.
A number of posters mocked the roster of musicians and the name of the concert series. “Dark day when Flo Rida is the biggest name on the lineup,” one commenter wrote.
“This is a great lineup if it were 1988,” another remarked.
“For anyone complaining, this IS a state fair lineup,” one comment quipped.
There have also been positive comments about the Freedom 250 concert announcement, indicating that there is an audience for these shows. Fans of many of the acts, however, seem to be disappointed by their decisions to perform in the Trump-supported concerts, while other members of the public are criticizing the administration for not being able to pull in bigger or more timely acts.
