On June 14, 2024, students from The Ohio State University Trio Upward Bound program embarked on an educational field trip to the historic King-Lincoln District, a notable African American neighborhood near Downtown Columbus, Ohio. This area is renowned for its prominent Black-owned businesses, which have been pillars of the community for decades.
The visit was orchestrated by Dr. Carter Womack, President and CEO of Leadership at its Best. Through his efforts, the students not only explored these businesses but also gained insights into their significant contributions to the community. The trip emphasized the importance of preserving the district’s rich cultural heritage and historic roots.
The first stop was the Lincoln Theatre at 769 East Long Street. Opened in the 1920s amidst pervasive racism, the theater became a beacon for Black talent, music, and theatrics. During segregation, African Americans created their own spaces for entertainment, and the Lincoln Theatre became a cultural hub. Today, it continues to host and produce plays, showcasing both well-known and emerging talents, particularly through its summer programs.
Another highlight of the trip was a visit to Battiste LaFleur, one of the few Black-owned florists in Columbus. The flower shop, passed down through three generations, is renowned for its exquisite bouquets and custom arrangements. Battiste LaFleur sources beautiful flowers from South America, serving clients both nationally and internationally.
The final stop was Adelphi Bank, one of the few Black-owned banks in the area. Adelphi Bank is dedicated to promoting financial literacy among both Black adults and youth. In today’s economy, financial education is crucial, and Adelphi Bank provides essential resources to help young people understand and manage their finances effectively.
Overall, the field trip was a beautiful experience. The Upward Bound scholars were fascinated by each stop, gaining hands-on experience with professionals and deepening their understanding of various careers. This enriching visit highlighted the enduring significance of the King-Lincoln District and its vibrant community.
