Netflix will say a final goodbye to Joe Goldberg in the highly-anticipated fifth and final season of You this spring.
The streamer dropped a date announcement teaser on Thursday.
As reported by Netflix’s Tudum, in the final season, Penn Badgley’s Joe Goldberg will return to New York, only to be met by some of his former dark secrets.
“We always said that we would stop after five and [that], in a perfect world, we would bring Joe back home to New York,” executive producer and showrunner Michael Foley told the outlet. “We loved the idea of things coming full circle for him. We’re excited by the fact that Joe came home as such a different person than [who] we saw in Season 1. At the core of our final story for Joe is this dichotomy of the old and the new.”
What will ‘You’ Season 5 be about?
For the past four seasons, viewers have followed Goldberg’s journey to find true love, starting in New York and continuing before the character took his talents to Los Angeles, San Francisco, and London.
As the official logline reads, “In the epic fifth and final season, Joe Goldberg returns to New York to enjoy his happily ever after… until his perfect life is threatened by the ghosts of his past and his own dark desires.”
As they prepare to say goodbye to the series, fans will find him back in New York City alongside his wealthy partner, Kate (Charlotte Ritchie), finally accepting that he is “fundamentally immoral.”
“Every season, they manage to find new space to make it interesting and relevant,” Badgley told Tudum, “And this season, I think somehow coming back to where it started allowed for it to just become grounded in the way that it needs to also have this kind of spectacular finish.”
“We always said that we would stop after five and [that], in a perfect world, we would bring Joe back home to New York,” said co-showrunner Michael Foley. “We loved the idea of things coming full circle for him. We’re excited by the fact that Joe came home as such a different person than [who] we saw in Season 1. At the core of our final story for Joe is this dichotomy of the old and the new.”
Cast for the fifth and final season of ‘You’
Along with Badgley and Ritchie, Madeline Brewer joins the You cast as Bronte, whom Tudum describes as “an enigmatic and free-spirited playwright,” that finds herself joining the team at Joe’s new bookstore, connecting with the character over literature and loss. Griffin Matthews will portray Teddy Lockwood, Joe’s brother-in-law, who was never entirely accepted by the Lockwood family. Anna Camp will also play Raegan and Maddie Lockwood, Joe’s twin sisters-in-law.
Recurring cast members include Nava Mau as Detective Marquez, Tom Francis as Clayton, Pete Ploszek as Harrison, b as Phoenix and Natasha Behnam as Dominique. Previously, Badgley teased that a familiar face would come back to haunt his character, but viewers will have to wait and see which blast from the past that will be.
